As of 24th June 2018 Google Chrome started marking all non-HTTPS websites as ‘NOT SECURE’
After years of trying to make the internet a safer place for its users, Google Chrome released Chrome 68 which marks all websites that do not have an SSL certificate as ‘Not Secure’.
What does this mean?
In short, if your website starts with ‘http’ (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and not ‘https’, Google Chrome might flash up a big red screen to your visitors that will tell them that your website is not trusted as it is ‘not secure’. This in turn will probably scare off a whole bunch of visitors which really sucks if you’re an online shop or heavily rely on potential clients visiting your site.
By ‘not secure’ Google Chrome means that the connection from the website to the user isn’t secure as the website has no SSL Certificate.
This means that any information sent on a non-https connection is sent using plain text including payment informatin, passwords etc which allows any potential evil attackers to view, collect or/and tamper with your data.
On top of all this, you may find your website SEO rank starts to drop as https websites will get a minor ranking boost.
How to make your website secure
There’s a number of ways you can add an SSL certificate to your website and they come in an array of prices – From FREE to mega expensive.
On basic sites we prefer to use Let’s Encrypt which is a free, automated and open certificate authority sponsored by powerhouses such as Google, Mozilla, Cisco, Facebook and a bunch of other big names which can be seen here: https://letsencrypt.org/sponsors/ .
Let’s encrypt also has a community formum which offer a plenthora of help posts/articals to help get you on your way.
If you’d prefere to pay for an SSL (only recomemneded for sites with high traffic and lots of sensitive data) then sites like Commodo, Global Sign and various other vendors can offer you a huge choice of SSL’s which come with various warranties to suite your websites requirements – We’ll go more in to the various types of SSL’s and what they do another time.
